Purlieu Photography is run by John Kiely. John is a photographer and educator from the North West of England. Over a thirty year period he has been exhibited and published internationally, showing specialisms that include large format and historical processes.
The ethos behind Purlieu is to create a space where like minded photographers can meet, gather and work together. The emphasis is on traditional and historical analogue processes, encouraging the use of, and preserving the craft of photography. This does not exclude digital photography, but this is regarded as a tool rather than a separate medium.
Purlieu also includes a gallery space that can be hired, in blocks of six days, by photographers and artists. The aim is to give emerging artists the opportunity to get their first solo exhibition on their resumes.
In addition photographers can hire darkroom space by the hour, either supported or, if you are experienced, open access.
